Open a password-protected Aadhaar PDF
The password of an e-Aadhaar PDF is the first four letters of your name in capital letters, followed by your year of birth. For SURESH KUMAR, born in 1990, it is SURE1990.
How the password is made
| Name on Aadhaar | Year of birth | Password |
|---|---|---|
| SURESH KUMAR | 1990 | SURE1990 |
| SAI KUMAR | 1990 | SAIK1990 |
| P. KUMAR | 1990 | P.KU1990 |
| RIA | 1990 | RIA1990 |
- Spaces are skipped, so SAI KUMAR gives SAIK.
- Dots count as characters, so P. KUMAR gives P.KU.
- A name shorter than four letters is used in full.
- Use the name exactly as printed in English on your Aadhaar.

Common problems
The password does not work
Check the name exactly as it is printed in English on the Aadhaar you downloaded, including initials and dots, and use only the four-digit year of birth, not the full date.
My name was updated recently
Use the name printed on the e-Aadhaar you downloaded. If you downloaded it before the update, that copy uses the old name.
The unlocked copy says the signature is not valid
UIDAI signs every e-Aadhaar digitally. Removing the password rewrites the file, so the signature can no longer be checked. Keep the original PDF for anyone who verifies it, and use the unlocked copy only where a password-protected file is not accepted.
A portal will not accept the PDF
Many upload forms reject password-protected files. Unlock it here, then upload the unlocked copy. If the form also has a size limit, compress the unlocked copy.

Questions
Is my Aadhaar uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF, your name and your year of birth stay on this device. The password is put together in your browser and is not stored or sent anywhere.
Do I have to unlock the PDF to open it?
No. To read it, type the password into any PDF reader when it asks. Unlock it only when an app or form cannot handle password-protected files.
Is an unlocked e-Aadhaar still valid?
UIDAI says e-Aadhaar is as valid as the physical card. Its digital signature is what lets others verify it, and an unlocked copy no longer carries a signature that can be checked. Share the original wherever verification matters.
Is the Aadhar card PDF password the same for everyone?
No. Each e-Aadhaar PDF has its own password, made from the name and year of birth printed on it. For a family member's Aadhar card PDF, use their name and their year of birth.
What if my name is in Hindi or another language on the card?
The password uses the English spelling of your name, as printed on the Aadhaar beside the other language.
